You never know when a storm may hit, so it is important to take precautions ahead of time so you are not caught by surprise.

No matter what area you live in, you will most likely experience some type of storm or natural disaster. There are different kinds of storms that pose various health and safety risks. Although there is no way to prevent these storms from happening, there are ways you can protect your home to ensure your and your family’s safety. You never know when a storm may hit, so it is important to take precautions ahead of time so you are not caught by surprise. Let’s go over some of the different types of storm damage.

Hail Damage

Usually, hailstorms are just an annoying inconvenience. But they can also be very dangerous. If it is big enough, hail can injure you if you are stuck outside during a storm. Additionally, it is well known for denting both cars and roofs and breaking windows. The best way to prepare for hail damage is by covering your car with a hardcover or parking in a covered garage. You can install hail-resistant shingles to protect your roof. If you notice dark spots on your roof after a hailstorm, those areas have been damaged. If you do not remedy the storm damage immediately, it can lead to cracks and leaks in your roof.

Water Damage

Water damage is one of the most prevalent types of storm damage, especially during hurricanes. If left unchecked, water causes wood to rot, drywall to crumble, and mold to grow. It also poses a threat to your home’s structure and also decreases indoor air quality. Make sure that your home’s drainage system is in good condition and check for any cracks or leaks in the foundation.

Wind Damage

Wind damage occurs during tornadoes, hurricanes, and even regular thunderstorms. Strong winds can break tree limbs, rip shingles off roofs, tear up gutters, and launch rocks and furniture into buildings. To protect your home against wind and storm damage, bring in your outside furniture or bolt it down. Powerful winds can even shake your house and weaken its foundation.

Ice Damage

Not only does ice increase the risk of slips and falls, but it can also cause structural damage. The weight of ice and snow can bring down trees and powerlines, leading to city-wide power failures. It is good to trim branches near power lines to prevent them from falling and cutting the power.
