With the first snow of the season just around the corner, it’s time to finish preparing your home for winter!

Tackling your winter to-do list can seem impossible between wrapping presents and hanging stockings by the fireplace. However, your outdoor winter home improvements can be taken care of with the help of a skilled residential contractor like Smith & Son’s. Here are some of our best tips for preparing your home for winter.

Add Weather Stripping

Weather stripping is a simple way to help keep the warm and cozy air inside of your home and not heat the whole neighborhood. Weather stripping can be purchased by you and installed by a professional like Smith & Son’s to help stop air leaks around doors and windows. Weather stripping should be added to any place in your home where there is or is the potential for a draft or leak:

  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Vents
  • Fans
  • Plumbing areas
  • HVAC units
  • Mail chutes
  • Electrical or gas lines

Check Your Roof

You need to make sure that you have a sturdy roof before the weight of winter snows arrive. Winter snow and ice can add a great deal of weight to roofs throughout the Maryland area, so your roof should be checked for ice dams and any water pooling. If you are concerned about ice dams forming on your roof (or if they have already formed in the past) you should:

  • Add insulation to your attic to stop the heat transfer from your home to your attic. Everything in the attic should be well-insulated including pipes, vents, chimneys, and lighting.
  • Make sure your attic is properly ventilated. An attic should have cold air coming in through ventilation and then the insulation to prevent that cold air from entering the rest of the home. Adequate ventilation can stop the warm air from your home from melting the ice accumulated on the roof.

Aside from checking your roof for ice dams, it’s also a good time to check the structure and safety of your roof as well. While we are evaluating your attic and ventilation system, we can also make recommendations for roof repair or replacement.
