One of the most stressful parts of homeownership is that this massive investment (your home) is always at risk of damage that will cause even greater expenses. One of the most prominent and most troublesome forms of damage that are common in homes is water damage. Water is an essential part of the house, but it can cause serious issues, whether it leaks unchecked over time or spews out of a burst pipe. As a homeowner, there are some signs of water damage that you can keep an eye out for so that you catch it before it can cause even more damage.
You Notice Musty Odors
If you’re noticing a musty odor in your home, it is probably due to water damage somewhere. Water damage often smells like wet newspapers until it starts to grow mold or mildew. If you’re picking up on a musty smell like mold and mildew, that is also an indication that you have water damage in your home.
Your Floors, Ceiling, or Walls Have Changed
One of the most common signs of water damage can be seen on your walls, ceilings, or floors. Any bubbling, peeling, or chipping paint may be an indication of water damage. Peeling or bubbling of wallpaper can also indicate water damage. Eventually, the walls and ceiling may even get bloated or start to feel spongy and may show signs of warping. Floors can be a little trickier to tell if there’s water damage because there are so many different materials. Carpeting will feel wet and likely grow mold. Wood may get discolored and warped. Vinyl tiles may start to peel. Finally, ceramic tiles will probably show signs of mold and mildew, especially in the grout.
You See Visible Mold or Staining
Mold grows in areas that are consistently wet or damp. If you have a persistent but slow leak, this could lead to mold growth in the area as the water spreads out. Mold can be almost any color, including black, blue, green, red, grey. If instead of a slow leak, it is an occasional leak, you may find staining. Water stains are often yellowish, and they are irregularly shaped, extending out from the source of the water.
Your Water Bills Are Higher Than Normal
If your water or sewage bill has suddenly increased without any reasonable explanation (like doing more laundry for more people or filling a pool), it might mean that you have a leak somewhere that you can’t see. If you do have a hidden leak, eventually, you’re going to have water damage around it.
