What Do I Do When My Basement Floods?

If your basement floods, you’ll need to take immediate and specific action.

Unexpected flooding is never something we want to deal with. Not only is it inconvenient, but the lasting damage from a flood can be extreme. Quick action is necessary to prevent repercussions that could ultimately damage and destroy your home. If your basement floods, in particular, you’ll need to take immediate and specific action.

Cut Off Power

Start by ensuring power has been completely cut off. In the case of a basement flood, this may be difficult as it is often the first place you would go to shut off the power. Call an electrician to ensure that your power is off before you even enter the flooded area.

In Case Of Rain

If rain is the source of flooding, you may have more time to take action than if a pipe bursts. If you are sure that rain is the source of the flooding call a reputable repair team and wait for the storm to pass before taking any next steps.

Take Precautions

Regardless of where the water comes from it’s likely that it will have become contaminated in the flooding process. Always wear boots and gloves as you deal with your flooded areas. You may also need a mask and waders depending on the height and quality of the water.

Stop & Remove The Water

In the case of a burst pipe, the very first thing you should do is shut off the water to your home, even if the flooding is due to rain you can never be too safe. This precaution may save you from significant damage if you can shut the water off soon enough. The next step is to remove the water- sump pumps, pool pumps, wet vacs, or a simple mop and bucket will all be needed to remove as much of the water as possible.

Remove Textiles & Start Drying

Everything in the flooded area should be removed, taken to a dry location for inspection, and then cleaned and cared for or disposed of accordingly. All carpets must be ripped up, as soon as possible, to prevent the growth and spread of mold. Once everything has been removed frying must start as quickly as possible. Open windows, fans, and dehumidifiers are all essential to this.

Protect From Mold

One of the most serious, and long-lasting concerns of a flood is the growth and proliferation of mold and mildew. Everything will need to be washed down and sprayed with an anti-mildew spray to prevent its growth. Any wet drywall and insulation will also need to be removed and replaced. Additionally, you may find that using a dehumidifier in the basement for long after the flood will help with long-term mold and mildew prevention.
